Ph.D. Degree Requirements
The doctoral program in Medical Nutrition Science is intended for students with B.S. and M.S. degrees in nutrition or an M.S. in biological sciences. Students are encouraged to complete the M.S. degree before applying to the program. The program seeks to expand knowledge in this area and provides experience at a major comprehensive research and teaching institution, KU Medical Center.
The doctoral program in medical nutrition science typically requires approximately 60 semester credit hours of graduate course work beyond the Bachelor of Science degree. For those enrolling with a Master of Science Degree in nutrition, approximately 30 graduate hours (700 to 900 level) generally are required.
Prior course work and the student’s research interests are considered in designing the plan of study. Students in the Ph.D. program must meet the research skills and responsible scholarship requirement of the university, fulfill program course work requirements, and successfully complete a written comprehensive examination to achieve Ph.D. candidacy. The Ph.D. candidate must submit a written dissertation proposal describing an original research project in some aspect of nutrition research, and defend the proposal in a comprehensive oral exam before beginning the dissertation research. The written dissertation and successful oral defense of the dissertation are required to receive the Ph.D. degree.

Prerequisite Courses. Students entering the Ph.D. program with bachelor's degrees should have completed 3 credit hours in biochemistry, 3 credit hours in physiology, and 3 credit hours in nutrition before admission. They must also take all courses required for the M.S. degree. Consult the academic advisor for specific requirements.
