This course will examine the society and culture of Spain in the period known as "the Golden Age." Subjects that will receive attention include: rural and urban society, economic and political organization of the Spanish and American peoples in the early years of the conquest, the place of women in society, the social basis for "Golden Age" culture, and the debate over the "decline of Spain."
